What Causes Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain can be caused by a number of injuries or conditions.  Common injuries that lead to lower back pain can include an injury to the soft tissues in the back.  This can be a sprain or a strain to the muscles or tendons.  Further, an injury to the bone, such as a fracture, can cause an extreme amount of back pain.  Lower back pain can also be caused by a disease or condition.  Often, herniated discs, a degenerative disc disease, can cause pain in the lower back if the disc impacted is situated low in the spine.  Further, osteoarthritis, scoliosis, and spinal stenosis can also cause pain in the lower back.

What Are the Symptoms?

Obviously, the main symptom is pain which can range from a dull ache to a sharp and stabbing pain.  It is common to feel pain in the lower back area, but also to have pain radiate to the extremities.  Lower back pain can also manifest in the buttocks, legs, and even the feet.  Depending on the condition or injury, it is also possible to have a numbness or tingling sensation in the back or the lower extremities.  A patient may also feel a reduced range of motion or stiffness.

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

A chiropractor works to restore balance and order to the body by ensuring the muscular system is aligned with the skeletal system.  The chiropractor works to achieve harmony through a number of techniques.  This can include manual manipulation, stretching and strengthening exercises, physical therapy, or medical massage.  Each patent is different and will require a full medical evaluation to determine the source of back pain.  At Joslyn Chiropractic, based out of Pontiac, we are proud to create a custom treatment plan for each individual patient.
